FROM THE ASHES

I soooo wish I had before pictures of this piece, but I don't.  I've just started blogging, and didn't think to do 'before' pictures before now.  ANYWAY, here goes.

About 5 years ago, my first little house as a single lady burned.  The house was considered a total loss.  What the fire didn't take, the water ruined.  EXCEPT for a few pieces.  And, too, I was told by the insurance people to 'not' bring anything out of the house.  Well, I kept seeing potential in this piece.  This entire top area was charred.  The mirror had cracked from the heat.  One of the little doors was so warped from the water, it would't close.  Most people would have let it been pushed in with the house.  But, I couldn't stand to see that happen.
So, out of the house it came, and into storage it went.  Then, just recently I pulled it out.  I took the mirror frame to have a new mirror put in..........took the base to my furniture repairman and had a new door made.  I scrubbed, and rubbed, and scrubbed, and rubbed the soot away.  Then out came my favorite cottage white paint.  Three coats later, her beauty was starting to show again.
With my handy mouse sander, I gave her a little shabby love.  And, now she stands in my shop waiting for someone to take her home.
I am soooo glad that I saved this gorgous old piece from being hauled away by the bull dozers like the rest of the rubble that was once my little house.

Didn't she turn out to be a beauty?

  1. She's beautiful! So glad you rescued her. Several years ago my husband's parents' house burned down to the ground. It was right before Christmas. They had gone to Hawaii and had brought me back a doll. She was still "sitting" under the tree which all that was left of the tree was the trunk. I still have her, with a little soot and all :)

It was weird going in the house, to see the glasses "hanging" in the china cabinet but when you reached for the glasses, they disintegrated.
